Contacts vs Messages
| Entry | Best for |
|---|---|
| Messages (farthest right of the top bar) | Chat with the help agent or a workspace agent: product how-tos, writing, knowledge-base lookup |
| Contacts (in the feature menu) | Person-to-person chat, add friends, handle friend requests; after joining a workspace also workspace group chat |
They stay separate so “ask AI” and “talk to a colleague” are not mixed in one list.
How to open Contacts
Tell the help agent “open Contacts” and it switches there. Or: top-bar Feature menu (grid icon) → Contacts.
- No workspace required: with no workspace joined yet, you can still add friends and start a direct chat.
- After a workspace is selected, besides the above you can create subgroups and join that workspace’s everyone group and other groups.
Add friends and direct chat
Tell the help agent: “add 13800001111 as a friend”, “list friend requests”, “accept the friend request”. You can also use the other person’s user number or email.
You can also do it on the page:
- In Contacts Add friend, fill the other person’s user number (copy yours from
Account→ Profile → Contact ID, or show a contact QR code on mobile; see Account (identity and preferences)). - Optional verification message, tap Send request; after they Accept under Pending friend requests, you are friends.
- Start a direct chat: fill the other person’s user number in the sidebar, or pick from Friends, then open the conversation and send text.
- After you are friends, ongoing direct chat is more free (current product rules apply).
Same-workspace colleagues vs strangers
- Colleagues in the same workspace: treated as trusted; you can usually direct-chat without adding as friends first.
- Neither colleague nor friend: before they reply you can usually send one message; after they reply you enter a short chat window; for long-term contact, become friends.
Workspace group chat
- Select a workspace in the top bar first.
- After you join a workspace, the system usually prepares an everyone group; creators or admins can also create subgroups in Contacts and invite members for a specific topic.
- Groups are only for members of that workspace, unlike friend direct chat which works with no workspace selected.
Common issues
| What you see | What to do |
|---|---|
| Cannot find a colleague | Confirm their user number; same workspace: check the member list |
| Cannot send a second message | May be the stranger rule; wait for a reply or add as a friend first |
| No group-chat entry | Select or create a workspace in the top bar first |
| Want to know how the product works | Go to top-bar Messages and ask the help agent |
